The biggest version of the Base Station, at 6.76 metres (22ft) has the most storage capacity with a payload of 700 kg, allowing it to carry touring motorbikes like the Harley Davidson and the Honda Goldwing.
“There’s no end to the uses of the Base Station,” says Prestige Jayco Bendigo Dealership Manager, Leon Mayer. “It has been a real revelation how people are enjoying using the combination of two great concepts: comfortable mobile accommodation and mobile storage space”
“The fun option was the key driver behind the design, especially with people who pursue extreme sports and outdoor activities, but it’s been amazing how people are extending its use into commercial enterprises.”
Jayco believes that there are even more uses for the Base Station, with inquiries from the Defence Forces to set up a recruitment display and office inside and real estate agents are looking at setting up mobile offices for land sales. Mining companies are already using the Base Station for remote work, as the storage area can be fitted out with additional bunks.
The Base Station’s unique design means it can sleep up to eight people. Up front is the caravan compartment which sleeps two, with a fold out double bed extending outside the vehicle’s super-structure. Add an optional converter and the dinette provides two additional sleeping berths, while inside the garage compartment there are also two fold down single beds with the option of double bunks.
At the rear, a sturdy fold-down back door ─ comprising the entire back of the vehicle ─ doubles as a ramp, so equipment and machines can be stored inside. Two cables allow the ramp to be turned into a deck. There is also a handy built-in mechanic’s rack in the rear compartment. An internal doorway links both compartments.
A shower and toilet are standard, making the Base Station completely self-sufficient.
The larger Base Station weighing at just over 2,100kgs, with a tow ball weight of 300 kgs, has an overall travel length is 7.97 metres (26ft 2in) and is 2.42 metres (7ft 11in) wide. The interior height is 1.97 metres (6ft 6in).
Under tow, the vehicle looks similar to Jayco’s top-end Sterling range of caravans with smooth fibreglass walls, sleek automotive finish and contemporary graphics.
Base Station features include: • Comfortable living interior featuring Euro-style furniture and contemporary décor and quality soft furnishings. • A three-way Dometic RM 2553 refrigerator. • SMEV 4 burner stove (with one 240V electric element), 12V range-hood, and microwave oven. • 12V lighting system including bed lights. • Easy roll drawers under dinette. • Double mattress (1.45 metres or 4 ft 9in). • Large recessed, stainless steel sink. • Jumbo storage boot at the front of the vehicle with side door access. • Alloy wheel rims. • Built-in mechanics rack
As with all other Jayco products, the Base Station features the company’s acclaimed ‘out-of-sight’ engineering technologies including its galvanised, extra-strength Millennium chassis, ‘Tough-frame’ construction system, and its smooth ride leaf-spring suspension and electric brake systems.
The smaller Base Station, 6.36 metres (20ft 10in) in length, is also available in an Outback model, this model has several additional features to handle road conditions in Australia’s remote regions including an under-slung axle for higher ground clearance, 6” chassis for superior strength, checkerplate side panel, mud flaps and the off-road tyres are 15” 235/70R15.
